VVS Laxman, the former Indian cricketer, reckons that Shreyas Iyer should be picked ahead of Suryakumar Yadav for India’s ODI series against England.
In the recently completed T20I series, both Iyer and Yadav had impressed everyone with their performances. Even VVS Laxman found it tough to choose between the two. However, he preferred Iyer over Yadav for the One-Day Internationals.
Shreyas Iyer has been a key player in India’s middle-order for a couple of years and his presence in the team provides great stability in playing XI. The 26-year old Shreyas Iyer was the second-highest run-scorer for India in the T20Is. He scored 121 runs from 5 matches at an impressive average of 40.33.
Team India has faced a long-standing problem for the number four slot in the batting order. However, they found the best solution to that problem in the form of Shreyas Iyer. As per VVS Laxman, Iyer has an advantage over Suryakumar Yadav, as far as experience is concerned.
Shreyas Iyer’s Performance Cannot Be Discounted – VVS Laxman
“I think it is very difficult to just choose one among both, Suryakumar Yadav and Shreyas Iyer. Because what really interests me was the way Shreyas Iyer batted at No. 6. He batted with authority, conviction and just understood the situation and played his shots right from the word go. Because we know that he is ideally suited for No. 4,” Laxman told.
VVS Laxman agreed to the fact that Suryakumar Yadav has performed brilliantly for the Mumbai Indians (MI) as well as for the Men in Blue in the T20I series against England. But he also said that Iyer’s performance cannot be overlooked.
“Suryakumar is also someone who has got the talent, but with experience, I feel Shreyas Iyer will be my pick ahead of him. Because we just can’t rely on one or two innings and we cannot really discount Shreyas Iyer’s performances in international cricket.
“Yes, Yadav has done really well for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, but Shreyas Iyer has been very consistent in whatever opportunities he got at the highest level. So, I will always choose Shreyas Iyer to do that role”, VVS Laxman added.
The three-match ODI series between India and England will start on Tuesday, March 23 in Pune. Now, it’ll be interesting to see who will get a place among these two in the playing XI for the first ODI against England.
